Why we changed our website

2014-03-13 / by Graham Holtslander / Leave a Comment

If you’ve been here before, you may have noticed that things have changed a bit around here. The feature image for this post is a preview of the theme we used to be using. Compare it with our current homepage by clicking here (it will open up in a new tab or window).

Since we’re kind of in this business, I figured it makes sense to explain the why in the decision to change how the site looked.

The content is front and center

With our old look, you saw our tagline and name, but that was about it. Even the wallpaper image wasn’t very useful for portraying what we do! You had to click a button to see those things. I wasn’t a big fan of that, and so I decided we needed a theme that didn’t put our vital information “below the fold”. Now, when you come to our website you see our three big loves: Web Application Development, Social Media Strategy, and Website Creation/Renovation. After seeing those things, you have really obvious “read more” calls to action for each subject. With the old look, you had to hover your mouse over the image to see what it meant, and that wasn’t obvious.

Responsive and mobile-friendly design is important…

…but not important enough to mean you should put extra effort into having it work on one or the other. Our old theme required extra effort just to have it look right on mobile, which was something that shouldn’t be the case. With the new look the responsive look is exactly that, no need to play around for one side of the coin or the other.

Why does this matter to you?

Maybe you have some problems with these things on your own site. Maybe you don’t even have a website at all! We take care at Holtslander Communications to make sure your website is accessible, relevant, informative, and – the bottom line – useful to your customers and clients.
